Bharani Nal Raja Raja Varma (1812-1883) was Raja Ravi Varma's uncle. It is said that he was Raja Ravi Varma's first tutor and his first mentor. Raja Raja Varma was an artist in this own right, having learnt the Tanjore style of painting from Alagiri Naidu, a Court artist from Madura.
