One of the most powerful and revered warrior kings, Shivaji is a hero to the Marathas. Skilful, intelligent and supremely well trained in warfare, Shivaji defined the legacy of Maratha Empire during his reign between 1630-1680. This is a characteristic scene of Shivaji, astride regally on a horse as he troops out with his army of soldiers in one of his many conquests. Shivaji's work by Ravi Varma came in for high praise for the artist had merely heard of his exploits yet managed to bring out the warrior king, who was crowned Chhatrapati (Monarch) in the most stunningly, perfect manner.
